Home Alarm System
The home alarm system can be very effective in scaring away intruders if the proper alarms and devices are incorporated.
Some options include having a home alarm system with two-way voice monitoring. During an emergency, an intercom is turned on and the monitoring centre speaks through it alerting the intruder that they are being observed. This action is sometimes enough to send the burglar fleeing.
The Edmonton Police reports that a home alarm system should also have a distinct signal, one that is heard both inside and outside the home. Any type of alarm audibly and loudly sounded will alert the occupants, the intruder and the neighbours that there is a problem in the home. The alarm signals may be a loud bell, buzzer, siren, horn or other warning device and may also be installed with various automatic lighting features which either turn on the household electric lights or activate special emergency signal lights. Burglars do not usually want to stick around when they know their presence is detected.
The Edmonton Police also advise that silent alarms which do not sound on the premises, but merely alert an off premises monitoring source, are not recommended for residences. A silent alarm may allow the intruder inside where he may be in a position to threaten an occupant while police respond to the silent signal. They also advise to keep alarm company signs clean and in plain view and request replacement decals when they become damaged or faded.
Many times there are adequate signs around the home indicating that a home alarm system is in operation when actually the signs are not visible. They can be covered up by shrubbery or flowers or may have even fallen over in the dirt and not been noticed. Check the signs regularly.
Security cameras are also a great addition to the home alarm system. When monitored off premises these cameras can be a useful tool to catch the intruder in the very act.
